URGENT CALL FOR SOLIDARITY WITH WOMEN ARRESTED IN SAN SALVADOR ATENCO, 
MEXICO

We, the undersigned organizations, issue this urgent call to 
individuals and organizations in the Feminist and Women's movement and also in other social movements at the national, regional and international levels, to join forces in this effort to report how women have been brutally arrested and tortured by State and Federal police forces on May 3, 4 and 5, 2006, in San Salvador Atenco, Mexico - and also to show our solidarity with them.

You will find more details about the aberrant situation created by the 
human rights violations suffered by these women and all the others who 
were also arbitrarily arrested in their community in the attached 
letter. The letter will be sent to different Hum an Rights bodies, at the regional and international level, including: 

Organization of the American States (OAS): Mr. Evelio 
Fernández Arevalo (President of the Interamerican Human Rights Commission), Mr. Victor Abramovich (Rapporteur on Women's Rights),
Mr. Florentn Melendez (Rapporteur on People Deprived of their Freedom and also Country Rapporteur for Mexico), all commissioners with the IHRC and Mr. Santiago Canton (Executive Secretary).

-         Ms. Yakin Erthuk, United Nations Special Rapporteur on 
Violence Against Women, their Causes and Consequences.

-         Mr. Thommas Hammerberg, Commissioner on Human Rights for the 
Council of Europe.

-         Ms. Hina Jilani, UN Secretary General Representative for 
Human Rights Defenders.

-         Ms. Rosario G. Manalo, President, Committee for the 
Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

We will welcome your endorsements to the letter before Thursday, May 
18, 5 pm (Mexico time), to solidaridadatenco@yahoo.com.mx
