----------------------------------------------------------------- . NEW! DG Special Report : Urban Environment: Challenges for Sustainability
From small towns to megacities of more than 10 million people, the developing world is irreversibly urbanizing. As rural migration into cities escalates, municipal infrastructures are struggling to find efficient, less polluting ways to meet the water, sanitation, transportation and power demands of its residents. By 2030 60 percent of the world's population are projected to live in settlements larger than 2,500 people. As such there is an urgent need to seriously consider the kinds of cities in which we want to live, and the critical issues that affect them; from air pollution and lack of clean water, to adequate financing and effective civic engagement, urban sustainability presents a host of challenges and opportunities.
"Urban Environment: Challenges for Sustainability" is a Special Report that looks at steps currently underway to manage the urban environment. It coincides with the third session of the World Urban Forum in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in June 2006, the UN Environment Day, and follows the World Water Forum in Mexico City in March 2006.

NEW Discussion Forum: Consultation with Civil Society and Indigenous peoples in the framework of the First Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities on Sustainable Development -------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Government of Bolivia, the Department of Sustainable Development (DSD) of the Organization of American States (OAS), in cooperation with the Summit of the Americas Department and Development Gateway Foundation would like to invite you to participate in the Virtual Consultation Forum with Civil Society and Indigenous Peoples. The forum is being organized as part of the preparation process of the First Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities on Sustainable Development that will address economic development sustainability and strengthening of environmental management through public participation, governance, gender equality, and protection of the rights for indigenous peoples.
This virtual forum has been created to facilitate the discussion on three important themes related to sustainable development in the region and that will be analyzed during the Meeting: (1) sustainable development of water resources, supporting integrated water resources management; (2) managing risks of natural disasters; and (3) sustainable agriculture, sustainable forestry and sustainable tourism.
You are invited to participate answering these key questions: 1. What are the needs on sustainable development that require an immediate response from competent organisms? 2. What do you think should be the priority on sustainable development during the discussion of ministers and why? 3. What are the benefits of using adequate practices for sustainable development?
