1. NEWS
**What 'state' are we in: Women's lives, changing states, expanding
markets**. The close co-operation with KARAT Coalition and Southern
partners resulted in a very intensive interaction and fruitful
networking among women from the East, West and South. Around 100 women
exchanged their views and expectations vis-à-vis states and markets.

**Gender & Civil-Military Relations** In this seminar held at "Landgoed
Huize Bergen", Vught, The Netherlands, representatives of various
military and civil institutions discussed the relations of gender and
modern military operations against the background of developing
Stability and Reconstruction in post-conflict scenarios. The keynote
speech was delivered by Mrs. Elisabeth Rehn, former Secretary of
Defence of Finland and former Special Representative of the UN in Bosnia
Herzegovina. She is also co-author on a UN report on woman rights. To

**Implementing Gender Mainstreaming (GM) in Management Processes**.
This web-based, 4-week training with experienced facilitators is designed
for people who seriously consider the implementation of Gender
Mainstreaming into management processes. Participants will achieve a clear
understanding of gender mainstreaming, its targets and ways of
implementing it, and how to elaborate the outline of a mainstreaming

**1st Biennial International Women's Studies Conference - The Effects
of European Union Enlargement on the Socio-Economic Development of Women

Izmir University of Economics and The Izmir Chamber of Commerce Turkey

**Muslin Women in Europe: Bodily Performances, Multiple Belongings and
the Public Sphere**. The Rubert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, at
the European University Institute organizes this workshop jointly with
the International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World
(ISIM, Leliden), to be held 3-9 July 2008, at the University
Complutense of Madrid, (UCM-Main Campus at Moncloa) Spain.
This workshop will focus on the heightened tensions between legal
citizenship and cultural citizenship (national belonging) that Muslin
Women in Europe are confronted with.

**Gender, Macro and International Economics** The Gender and Macro
Economics Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GEM-LAC) jointly
with the Faculty of Economics of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de
México, announces the First Intensive Course in Latin America and the
Caribbean on Gender, Macro and International Economics, to be held from
25 August to 8 September 2006, at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de
Mexico, Mexico City. The purpose of this course is to enhance the
skills and knowledge of economists from Latin America and to provide
methodological tools to strengthen a gender perspective in public

**10th International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women - Mundos de
Mujeres Women´s Worlds 2008 (MMWW08)**. The first entirely bilingual
edition of this Congress, (Spanish/English) is programmed to be held on
3-9 July 2008 at the Universidad Complutense, Madrid, Spain. It is a
major international event with the main goal to continue the fight
against social injustice and gender inequalities. Two central themes
have been chosen to be discussed, namely, violence and migrations.
However, these themes will not be the only ones to be addressed. MMWW08

approach to migration – it looks at the gender dynamics of both
international and the lesser-researched internal migration and the

**The Story Behind the Numbers: Women and Employment in Central and
Eastern Europe and the Western Commonwealth of Independent Status**
This report examines women's labour market situation in the countries of
Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Western Commonwealth of
Independent States (CIS) in the context of the social and economic
transformations in the region in the past 15 years. Using statistical
data from the UNECE Gender Statistics Database, the report analyses
trends in women's and men's labour force participation during the
transition to a market-oriented economy in 18 countries in Eastern
Europe and assesses their implications for the economic security of

**Mainstreaming Gender in Development: A Critical Review**. This
edition of the Oxfam publication, Gender and Development by F. Porter
and C. Sweetman (Eds), critically explores how gender mainstreaming
has been implemented in development organisations. The articles presented
in the journal assess the impact of gender mainstreaming in grassroots,
national, and international organisations, and suggests ways of

WomenLead in the Fight Against AIDS (Handbook, 23 May 2006)
Read the stories of a dynamic group of women who are on the front lines
in the fight against AIDS. These 12 leaders came together for CEDPA"s

7, 2005 in Washington, DC. Each has a powerful story to tell about AIDS

**Poisoned Flowers: The Impact of Spiraling Drug Addition on Palaung
Women in Burma** The Palaung Women's Organization (PWO) has launched a
new report entitled "Poisoned Flowers" detailing how increased opium
production and addiction is devastating Palaung communities in northern
Shan State, exposing the failure of drug eradication programs under the
military regime in Burma. This new report, based on interviews with
eighty-eight wives and mothers of drug addicts, shows how women in
Palaung areas have become increasingly vulnerable due to the rising

for Miracles** International Alert announces this report written by Judy El
Bushra with Ancil Adrian-Paul and Maria Olson. This report, based on a

4. CALL FOR PAPERS/PROPOSALS
**Research on Female Genital Mutilation and Female Sexuality** The
World Health Organization (WHO) Department of Reproductive Health and
Research is calling for proposals to examine and evaluate the role of female
sexuality in women's continued support of FGM. The study duration is
12-17 months. For information on deadlines for submission of concept
papers or full proposals for a first selection is 28 June 2006. The
deadline for full applications of selected projects is 31 August 2006,
with projects beginning in January 2007 and concluding by May 2008. For

5. GRANT/FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
Fellowships for HIV/AIDS and Public Health Policy Research in Africa
The Social Science Research Council announces a new fellowship
opportunity for African researchers, policy analysts, program planners
and practitioners. Up to eight fellowships will be awarded for health
and social policy research in Eastern and Southern Africa on (1) the
gender and political economy of care-giving and HIV/AIDS; or (2) sexual
violence and HIV/AIDS. Applications are due by July 15, 2006. An
