1. NEWS **INSTRAW’s Gender Training Wiki** as a groundbreaking initiative, UN-INSTRAW launched on 28 August 2006 the first-ever Gender “Wiki”, an online tool facilitating and increasing the exchange of knowledge-sharing on capacity-building activities and resources worldwide. Through a free Internet downloadable wiki software, this kind of website allows users to add, remove, edit and change all content quickly and easily. In its efforts to embrace the new technologies for empowering women, the UN-INSTRAW has developed this first-ever “wiki” specifically devoted to gender issues for all NGOs, popular organisations, universities and UN agencies around the globe. The Gender Training Wiki can be visited at the following URL: http://www.un-instraw.org/wiki/training/index.php/Main_Page **Women’s Political Participation** INSTRAW launched on 22 August 2006 its new page on Governance, Gender and Political Participation of Women at the Local Level. This initiative aims at promoting women’s rights, equality, participation and political leadership of women in local governments in Latin America through the exchange of knowledge and the use of tools and good practices. Also available on this page is all the information generated by the Project that was initiated in March 2006. INSTRAW has been implementing this project called “Strengthening governance with a gender perspective and the political participation of women at the local level” with the financial support from the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI). **The Nobel Women’s Initiative** Established in 2006 by sister Nobel Peace Laureates Jody Williams, Shirin Ebadi, Wangari Maathai, Rigoberta Menchú Tum and Betty Williams, was created to join efforts in promoting peace with justice and equality, and to help strengthen work being done in support of women's rights around the world. The Nobel Women’s Initiative will work to prevent and combat violence against women, share information, sponsor international meetings, and carry out networking with a view to action. **16th Anniversary - 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign** The Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL), at Rutgers, State University of New Jersey, will hold its 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign for 2006 from 25 November to 10 December 2006. This year’s Campaign celebrates activists who have made the campaign a success and honors women human rights defenders who have suffered intimidation and violence for their activism and/or have given their lives fighting for gender equality. The GSP aims to enhance national capabilities in the production, use and dissemination of gender statistics to lead to more effective policies promoting change for the benefit of women and the advancement of society as a whole. Since 1997 GSP activities have commenced on both the regional and national levels in twelve Arab countries. 2. EVENTS **Analyzing the Law from Gender Perspective – Gender Based Violence Legal Training** This training activity, organized by the Center for Prevention of Domestic Violence, will take place on 13-19 November 2006, in Belgrade, Serbia. **Reclaim the Night – Women’s March against rape and male violence** This year as part of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, FORWARD is participating in Reclaim the Night 2006 March to be held on 25th November 2006. Reclaim the Night is an event held in central London where women and girls march together in protest at rape and male violence, falling conviction rates and the fact that women are not free to live their lives without the threat of male violence. Last year over 700 women and girls marched to demand an end to this violence against women and to speak out for ourselves and those whose voices cannot be heard. **The Millennium Development Goals Report 2006** The Millennium Development Goals Report 2006 is based on a master set of data that has been compiled by an Inter-Agency and Expert Group on MDG Indicators led by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat. **Women against Violence Europe – WAVE** The contents of this Manual evolved during the DAPHNE project BRIDGING GAPS, implemented by WAVE from April 2005 to March 2006. It is the final result of the project. The aim of the project was to develop guidelines and standards for good cooperation between state agencies and women's NGOs. This Manual aims at contributing to the development and improvement of effective multi-agency cooperation by providing background information as well as concrete guidance and recommendations. It is one of the main goals of this Manual to focus on the protection and safety of victims. **Violence Against Women in Georgia** Report prepared by the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) and the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA) and submitted on the occasion of the 36th session of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women. This Report is the result of the experience gained by OMCT’s Violence Against Women Programme in submitting alternative information to CEDAW and GYLA’s access to first-hand information on the situation of victims and its work with authorities and relevant institutions in Georgia. GYLA has been very active in putting forward legislative and protective measures aiming at improving the situation of victims of domestic violence and trafficking. 4. CALL FOR PAPERS/PROPOSALS **Women Writing and Reading: Past and Present, Local and Global** This three day conference, to be held 4-6 May 2007 at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada, offers a forum for academics and the wider community to discuss issues around the theme of women as writers and readers. The aim of the conference is to explore these issues in the past and present, and in a local and global context. We invite contributions from a wide variety of perspectives – social, literary, artistic, historical, political, economic, scientific, legal, philosophical, and so on. **Engaging men in “Women’s” Issues** Women for Women International, a non-profit humanitarian organization, seeks submissions for the winter 2007 issue of its bi-annual academic journal, Critical Half. The journal is intended to raise awareness and spark debate among a variety of audiences by presenting various perspectives on economic, social, and political issues as they relate to women in international development and conflict and post-conflict societies. This issue of the journal will focus on how men can be engaged to promote positive change in gender relations at the family, community, and national levels.
