3. NEW PUBLICATIONS, PAPERS/ARTICLES AND/OR WEBSITES
**Securing Equality, Engendering Peace: A Guide to Policy and Planning
on Women, Peace and Security** On the occasion of the international Day
of Peace, 21 September 2006, INSTRAW has published its guide to policy
and planning on women, peace and security (UN SCR 1325), which
concentrates on the creation of national action plans on the issue of
women, peace and security (WPS). This guide examines one of the crucial
steps on the path towards the full implementation of existing laws,
namely the formulation and implementation of concrete policies and
plans
and helps in facilitating the development of realistic action plans on
women, peace and security through the provision of good practices,
specific recommendations and a six-step model process. To download this
publication, please visit:

**Beyond Honour** Crimes of Honor Book by Dr. Tahira S. Khan. This
research-based book clears the misconception that honour-related
violence against women occurs only in Asian and African Muslim
countries. It attempts to explain the origin and persistence of the
honour code through the study of histories of religious, legal, social
and political institutions, from ancient times to the present day.

**Joining Hands: Integrating Gender and HIV/AIDS** This new report,
published by the Agency for Research and Cooperation in Development
(ACORD), in addition to its overarching objective of addressing female
vulnerability, specific project objectives included: assessing the
effectiveness of the Stepping Stones process (is the first complete
‘package’ that directly addresses the core element of HIV/AIDS
vulnerability – namely, the inequalities that govern gender and other
social relations within most societies the world over); building the
capacity of local structures to respond; and promoting community-led
responses through effective partnerships and advocacy actions. The
report, available in English, French and Portuguese, can be downloaded
from ACORD's website: http://www.acord.org.uk

Advocacy Officer

**Achieving Women’s Economic and Social Rights: Strategies and Lessons
from Experience** In 2005 AWID asked over 50 activists working in
diverse settings all over the world: 1) what strategies they found most
useful in their efforts to improve economic and social rights for
women;
2) the greatest challenges they were encountering in their work; 3) did
the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) framework actually
fulfill its promise in presenting them with a new and more effective
approach to their work. This report synthesizes and analyzes some
important examples and lessons that emerged through this investigative
process.

**Manual of UN Human Rights – Special Procedures** This Manual aims to
provide guidance to the mandate-holders appointed under the various
United Nations human rights Special Procedures. It also seeks to
facilitate a better understanding of their work by all other
stakeholders in the process. The Manual endeavours to reflect good
practices and to assist the mandate-holders in their efforts to promote
and protect human rights. It does so in light of the relevant mandates
by which the various Special Procedures have been established and of
the
overall mandate given to the Human Rights Council in General Assembly
resolution 60/251. Examples of Thematic Mandates with specific links to
