NEWS **International Conference on “The prevention and combating human trafficking – exchange of experience, development of approaches and strengthening of cooperation** The aim of this international Conference held 15-16 September 2006, Dushanbe, Tajikistan was to contribute to the fight against trafficking in human beings, to establish cooperation between the countries of origin and transit, to support rights and interests of the victims of trafficking. **Six Years Later: UN Resolution 1325, Women's Participation in Peace and Security--Have We Realized its Full Potential?** The International Resources Group (IRG) and the Society for International Development (SID-Washington, D.C. Chapter) organize a Discussion Forum to examine Resolution 1325 on 26 October 2006, 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m., at IRG Offices in Washington, D.C. **Gender-based Violence: What Can RH/HIV/MH PROGRAMS do about it?** This event will be held on 27 October 2006, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the School of Public Health and Health Services, George Washington University, Washington, D.C. The session will discuss a range of approaches available to address GBV within the RH/HIV/MH sectors - in service delivery, policy, community mobilization and BCC programs, highlights 'promising practices', and lays out recommendations for future initiatives. **Strengthening Regional Work on GBV** This meeting is hosted by the Interagency Gender Working Group (IGWG), East Africa Region Mission, PATH, Raising Voices and the GBV Prevention Network, and will be held 8-10 November 2006 in Kampala, Uganda. The meeting aims to assemble organizations working on GBV and RH/HIV, in order to: 1) share state of the art tools and promising interventions; 2) strengthen capacity of local organizations; 3) facilitate exchange between regional actors and 4) develop strategies for the future GBV programming in the region. NEW PUBLICATIONS, PAPERS/ARTICLES AND/OR WEBSITES **Securing Equality, Engendering Peace: A Guide to Policy and Planning on Women, Peace and Security** On the occasion of the international Day of Peace, 21 September 2006, INSTRAW has published its guide to policy and planning on women, peace and security (UN SCR 1325), which concentrates on the creation of national action plans on the issue of women, peace and security (WPS). This guide examines one of the crucial steps on the path towards the full implementation of existing laws, namely the formulation and implementation of concrete policies and plans and helps in facilitating the development of realistic action plans on women, peace and security through the provision of good practices, specific recommendations and a six-step model process. **Beyond Honour** Crimes of Honor Book by Dr. Tahira S. Khan. This research-based book clears the misconception that honour-related violence against women occurs only in Asian and African Muslim countries. **Joining Hands: Integrating Gender and HIV/AIDS** This new report, published by the Agency for Research and Cooperation in Development (ACORD), in addition to its overarching objective of addressing female vulnerability, specific project objectives included: assessing the effectiveness of the Stepping Stones process (is the first complete ‘package’ that directly addresses the core element of HIV/AIDS vulnerability – namely, the inequalities that govern gender and other social relations within most societies the world over); building the capacity of local structures to respond; and promoting community-led responses through effective partnerships and advocacy actions. **Achieving Women’s Economic and Social Rights: Strategies and Lessons from Experience** In 2005 AWID asked over 50 activists working in diverse settings all over the world: 1) what strategies they found most useful in their efforts to improve economic and social rights for women; 2) the greatest challenges they were encountering in their work; 3) did the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) framework actually fulfill its promise in presenting them with a new and more effective approach to their work. **Manual of UN Human Rights – Special Procedures** This Manual aims to provide guidance to the mandate-holders appointed under the various United Nations human rights Special Procedures. It also seeks to facilitate a better understanding of their work by all other stakeholders in the process. The Manual endeavours to reflect good practices and to assist the mandate-holders in their efforts to promote and protect human rights. It does so in light of the relevant mandates by which the various Special Procedures have been established and of the overall mandate given to the Human Rights Council in General Assembly resolution 60/251. 4. GRANT/FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES **Business and Legal Fellowship Program for Middle Eastern Women** The U.S. Department of State has selected the America-Mideast Educational and Training Services, Inc. (AMIDEAST), a private, nonprofit organization that strengthens mutual understanding and cooperation between Americans and the peoples of the Middle East and North Africa, to implement a program that will provide women from that region unique opportunities to learn management, business and legal skills through a combination of advanced study and internships at top U.S. businesses and law firms.
