1. NEWS **China-Russia Women's Culture Week** The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) informs that the third China-Russia Women's Culture Week is to be held on 19-25 October 2006 in Beijing, Shanghai and Suzhou. A forum will be organized for Chinese and Russian women to exchange views on women's development and discuss relations between women and politics, economics and society. This Culture Week is organized under the framework of the Women's Committee of the China-Russia Friendship Committee for Peace and Development. 2. EVENTS **Gender, Health, and Poverty E-learning Course**. This 80-hour e-learning course is offered by the World Bank Institute (WBI) of the World Bank from 18 October to 28 November 2006. This learning program provides a framework for analyzing cross-sectoral linkages in development interventions, focusing on the central role of gender, particularly as it affects improving health outcomes for the poor. This course will increase capacity of participants for promoting gender, health, and poverty issues in national poverty reduction strategies and programs and assist countries in achieving related MDGs. **How Do We Want to Raise Our Children? ** This 3-day international conference organized by Centers International will be held 17-20 November 2006, Bratislava, Slovak Republic. Its objective is to discuss the results obtained from the year-long campaign that has offered an opportunity to reflect on how grassroots women's groups can support the development of children. The conference will extract common values and common issues of parenting throughout very diverse geographical, social and cultural settings. **Gender Equality Under Finland’s President** Karat News reports that experts in gender equality policy will gather to debate the theme of men and gender equality in Helsinki on 5-6 October 2006. A major objective is to strengthen men's involvement in the discussion by asking how men relate to gender equality issues. A further aim is to reinforce this theme as a separate theme in the gender equality policies of member states. The event is organized by European Commission and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. Among the participants will be officials of the member states and the Commission, as well as representatives of the social partners and non-governmental organizations. NEW PUBLICATIONS/PAPERS/ARTICLES/WEBSITES **The Division of Reproductive Health (DRH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has created the Reproductive Health Assessment Toolkit for Conflict-Affected Women (publicly available in November 2006) through the financial support of USAID and the Andrew Mellon Foundation through the CDC Foundation. The Toolkit provides tools for field staff with limited survey skills to collect data on the reproductive health needs and outcomes of women affected by conflict. **The UN Secretary General's Study on Violence against Women** The United Nations Secretary-General has released a study that will be presented at the UN General Assembly on 9 October 2006. The study is a response to a 2003 UN General Assembly request for the Secretary-General to conduct an in-depth study on all forms of violence against women (resolution 58/185). The study provides recommendations on the national, intergovernmental, and UN level, on the action steps governments should take to end the impunity in which violence against women is perpetrated. **Bridging Gaps - From Good Intentions to Good Cooperation (Manual for Effective Multi-Agency Cooperation in Tackling Domestic Violence)** The Manual resulting from the WAVE (Women Against Violence Europe) Daphne Project is now available for download. The aim of the project was to develop guidelines and standards for good cooperation between state agencies and women's NGOs by providing background information as well as concrete guidance and recommendations. The Manual is based on the contributions of "bridging gaps" project partners from 11 European countries and draws upon the work and experiences of many committed experts and academics in the field. **Taking CEDAW Seriously** The report from the Conference organized by the Women’s Human Rights Alliance in co-operation with the Irish Centre for Human Rights, National University of Ireland Galway, and the Irish Council for Civil Liberties is now available. The aim of the conference was to promote, apply and enforce the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, CEDAW. **Women in Parliament: Beyond Numbers. A Revised Edition** The Women in Parliament: Beyond Numbers Handbook produced by IDEA (International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance) is a new, updated edition covering the ground of women’s access to the legislature in three steps: It looks into the obstacles women confront when entering Parliament – be they political, socio-economic or ideological and psychological. It presents solutions to overcome these obstacles, such as changing electoral systems and introducing quotas, and it details strategies for women to influence politics once they are elected to parliament, an institution which is traditionally male dominated. **The Status of Women in Iraq, An Assessment of Iraq’s De Jure and De Facto Compliance with International Legal Standards** This volume was published in July 2005 by the Iraq Legal Development Project of the American Bar Association. CALL FOR PAPERS/PROPOSALS **Past Debates, Present Possibilities, and Future Feminisms: A Women’s and Gender Studies Conference Celebrating 30 Years of NWSA** The National Women's Studies Association (NWSA) announces its Call for Proposals for its 2007 Conference which is scheduled for 28 June-1 July 2007 in St. Charles, IL, a suburb of Chicago. **Gender Research Methodologies in the Development Context**. The conference was a milestone in the development of women's and gender studies in the Nordic countries and significant for building networks among young, female scholars in a new, expanding research field. The Centre for Women's Studies and the National Graduate School of Gender Studies now invite you to the conference "Past, Present, Future - From Women's Studies to Post-Gender Research" celebrating the 25th anniversary of "Kvinnouniversitetet". The scholarships cover a wide range of subjects: human rights, sexuality, gender and development, through to politics and the life sciences.
