1. NEWS **Manifesto for Gender Equality in Indian Media**. This Manifesto was adopted at the EU-India Final Conference on Gender Equity in Media, held 9-10 December 2006, New Delhi, India. Its objective is to assist in creating a culture of equality within the media, to offer women the opportunity to participate in decision-making, to make gender equality an issue that will assist in confronting social barriers. **Mama Cash Campaign - 88 Days**. To kick off International Human Rights Day December 10th, Mama Cash, an international foundation that funds women’s organisations and groups worldwide based in The Netherlands, is initiating a global campaign via Internet and e-mail that will span 88 days, from 10 December 2006 to 8 March 2007, International Women’s Day. The Campaign aims to raise funds for groups which are receiving significantly less funding than they did 5 years ago, for women’s initiatives, and for raising awareness on women’s rights. **Safe Cities Regional Programme: Violence Against Women and Public Policy**. On 14 December 2006 the “Safe Cities Regional Programme: Violence Against Women and Public Policy” was launched in Rosario, Argentina. This Programme is being carried out by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM and coordinated by UNIFEM's Regional Office for Brazil and the Southern Cone. The Network Women and Habitat (Red Mujer y Hábitat) participates as main partner in the application of the Programme. **Asian Forum on Women in Disasters**. Sixty representatives of government and non-government organisations and aid agencies involved in the tsunami relief and reconstruction efforts, from India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand gathered in Chennai, India, on 16-18 December, 2006. The objective of the meeting was to share the results of the Survey of Women’s Human Rights Violations in the December 2004 tsunami aftermath in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand and in the aftermath of the October 2005 earthquake in Pakistan. **Bill on Equal Rights & Opportunities for Women & Men**. The Parliament of Kazakhstan accepted on 8 November 2006 the submission of a Bill on Equal Rights and Opportunities of Women and Men, as initiated by a group of deputies. **Asia Pacific NGO Consultation with the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women**. Thirty-five women from 22 countries around the Asia-Pacific region, including Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Burma, China, Cook Islands, Fiji, India, Iran, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Korea, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, Russia, gathered on 11-12 September 2006, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, to dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women (UNSRVAW), Dr Yakin Erturk, on the topic of “Culture and Violence Against Women in Asia Pacific”. 2. EVENTS **What Kind of Man are You? **. This is a multi-media campaign aiming to bring public attention to the growing incidence of HIV/AIDS among women in India. The campaign addresses men using popular, entertaining platforms like television, radio, printed materials, cinema/theatres, and the internet to promote equality within marriage that - it is hoped - will enable women to negotiate condom use and other measures to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and other infections. What are intended to be sensitive yet tough/masculine campaign messages have been translated into 6 languages: Bengali, Hindi, English, Kannada, Tamil, Telegu and Marathi. ** Equal Rights, Equal Voices – Migrant Women in the European Union** The European Women’s Lobby (EWL) will hold this public Seminar on 19 January 2007, in Brussels, Belgium, which will gather for the first time ever, migrant women leaders from across the European Union. **Partnering for Change: Movement Building in the 21st Century**. This is one of the events to be held on 21 January, 2007, during the World Social Forum, Nairobi, Kenya. The Women’s Learning Partnership (WLP) will present this interactive panel and dialogue with women’s rights activists from Africa and the Middle East, to discuss strategies to strengthen social movements, particularly women’s movements. The event will include the premier of Against All Odds: Women Partnering for Change in a Time of Crisis, a new 25-minute video released by Women’s Learning Partnership that showcases the perspectives of activists from around the world including Afghanistan, Brazil, Egypt, Iran, Morocco, and Lebanon. **Security for Whom? **. Isha L'Isha and the Coalition of Women for Peace are holding the Second Annual Alternative Conference, entitled "Security for Whom?" on 23 January 2007, in Haifa, Israel. The conference aims at bringing together policy makers and leading thinkers to address the key issues that affect Israel's security. Speakers will address the war's impact on Jewish and Palestinian women, the price paid in the name of "national security", and the future dangers that await citizens of Israel and the region as a result of the continuation of the "Security" policy of the militaristic government in Israel. **Seeds of Hope**. The Women’s Centre of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, will celebrate International Women’s Day 2007 – 8 March – by hosting an interactive project that connects women support centres around the world. The Seeds of Hope project involves: 1) creating gardens throughout our city comprised of horticultural seeds donated from women support centres and groups from around the world and, 2) creating a booklet of International Women’s Day Stories. Participating countries will be invited to share a brief description of the types of celebrations that take place in their country and these descriptions will be collated into a booklet that will be deposited at the garden site centres, and displayed on the day of celebration. This Journal has been elaborated by IGTN Asia and produced by International Gender and Trade Network (IGTN). The journal addresses some of the questions concerning the linkages between trade and finance and the gender implications, with an emphasis on impacts for Asian women. **Tools for the Promotion of Safe Cities from the Gender Perspective** This Guide is a result of the experience gained from the Regional Programme “Non-Violent Cities for Women- Safe Cities for All", carried out in Rosario, Argentina and Lima, Peru by CISCSA (Centro de Intercambio y Servicios Cono Sur Argentina) and the Center for Peruvian Women Flora Tristán (Centro de la Mujer Peruana Flora Tristán) in 2004 with the support of the United Nations Trust Fund to Eliminate Violence Against Women. **Improving women's lives: World Bank (WB) actions since Beijing**. This Report describes the role of the World Bank in the international effort to promote gender equality and empower women. Looking ahead, the WB's support to empower women and girls will emphasize three areas: 1) supporting gender-relevant policy analysis, dialogue, and operational work; 2) promoting greater gender equality through private sector development; 3) working more closely with civil society and development partners. **Gender Guide to World Bank and IMF Policy-Based Lending** This Gender Guide, prepared by Suzanna Dennis and Elaine Zuckerman, describes the impact on people's lives, particularly on women, of World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) policy-based loans: loans to developing countries that require governments to reform economic, financial and trade policies. **The Dutch Women's Thesaurus**. This Thesaurus has been created to serve as a professional tool for students, researchers and librarians to describe and locate women's information in the collections of libraries, documentation centres and archives. The Thesaurus is a standardized list of about 2400 semantically and generically related terms with detailed instructions for use. It can be seen as a reflection of developments within women's movements and women's studies. **Researching Violence Against Women: A Practical Guide for Researchers and Activists**. This manual, written by Mary Ellsberg and Lori Heise from PATH, is a co-publication of PATH and WHO, published in 2005. It draws on the collective experiences and insights of many individuals, and in particular from the implementation of the WHO Multi-country Study on Women's Health and Domestic Violence against Women in over 10 countries. The manual has been developed in response to the growing need to improve the quality, quantity, and comparability of international data on physical and sexual abuse. It outlines some of the methodological and ethical challenges of conducting research on violence against women and describes a range of innovative techniques that have been used to address these challenges.
