1. NEWS **The Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking**. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has launched on 26 March 2007 in London, England, a campaign to highlight human trafficking, and an issue it says has reached epidemic proportions over the past decade. The Campaign brings together several United Nations and NGOs in this initiative which aims to raise awareness of trafficking both among potential victims and those who buy services or products that rely on slave labour. **The Women’s Rights Architecture - Strengthening a Coherent Approach to Women’s Rights in the United Nations**. At the recent CSW meeting in New York (26 February – 9 March), 155 women’s NGOs submitted an open letter to the UN Member States and the UN Secretary General on behalf of the NGO Linkage Caucus, welcoming the strong impetus for a specific women’s entity within the structures of the UN. The proposal, referred to as “gender architecture”, consists in merging the three main current mechanisms namely, the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI), the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) and the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) into one entity by creating a new Office on Gender Equality and Advancement of Women. **National Forum – Emp-owering Kuwaiti Females: A Civilization Demand and Future View**. The Kuwait Transparency Society (KTS) Women Emp-owering Centre opened on 25 March 2007 in Kuwait the National Forum Emp-owering Kuwaiti Females: A Civilization Demand and Future View. Among its objectives were the dissemination of family values among the populace, urging reform and combating corruption at all levels, and the coordination of official and private efforts to open the door for preparing young Kuwaiti women to be future leaders. **Moldovan Law on Domestic Violence**. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has welcomed the Moldova Parliament’s decision to adopt a law aimed at preventing and combating domestic violence in all levels of Moldovan society. The law is aimed at preventing and combating the problem, along with setting up rehabilitation centres and providing other support services for the victims. 2. EVENTS **Virtual Discussion – Gender Training**. The United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW), the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), invite to this three-week virtual discussion on gender training for security sector personnel that will be held from 9 to 27 April 2007. Experts from around the world are invited to participate and share their views on the gender sensitisation of security sector personnel and on how to measure the impact and outcomes of this gender training. **The Role of Women in Stabilization and Reconstruction**. The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) will hold this event on 10 April, 2007, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at its headquarters located in Washington, D.C. The USIP, jointly with Women in International Security, the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice, and the Initiative for Inclusive Security have engaged a variety of stakeholders to explore specific, actionable recommendations to promote women in various stages of the peace process. **International Congress on Gender Violence: Practical Measures and Proposals for the Europe 27**. The Foundation “Against Discrimination and Ill-Treatment: Tolerance Zero”, under the authority of the Generalitat Valenciana, jointly with the University of Valencia, Spain, promote the celebration of this international congress on 19-20 April 2007. International experts and professionals working in the different areas related to gender violence will participate in the congress in order to investigate further on current understanding of ill-treatment and share models and examples of good practice implemented by various regional authorities and local entities. **IWMF Leadership Institute for Women Journalists**. This week-long Institute to be held in Chicago, Illinois, on 16-20 July 2007 offers women working in the US media the opportunity to become leaders by developing the skills that all leaders have. **Good practices Exchange – Council of Europe (CoE)**.The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities created within the Council of Europe (CoE) in 1957 is a consultative body with the objective of genuinely representing both local and regional authorities and committed to the fight to end domestic violence against women. The Congress invites local and regional authorities to share their experiences in the fight against domestic violence. **Gender in the European Union’s Peace and Security Policy**. The first focus of this European networking conference to be held 4-6 May 2007, Berlin, Germany, will be to analyse and debate different means of intervention, both civil and military, raise awareness on the different effects of the European Union’s peace and security policy on women and men; and introduce a gender perspective into the European peace and security policy. **WIDE Annual Conference: New aid, old trade: What do Women have to say? **. Wife’s Annual Conference 2007 will be hosted by the Gender and Development Working Group of the Spanish Platform of Development NGOs (CONGDE), on 14-17 June 2007 in Madrid, Spain. **Fourth World Congress of Rural Women**. The World Congress of Rural Women is an international gathering of rural women scheduled to be held at the International Convention Centre on 23-26 April, 2007 in Durban, South Africa. **Women and Public Life: Empowerment & Participation in Social Studies & Research**. **Watta Satta: Bride Exchange and Women's Welfare in Rural Pakistan**. This World Bank policy research working paper by Ghazala Mansuri and Hanan G Jacoby was published in February 2007. The authors study the pervasive marriage custom of watta satta (bride exchanges between families) in rural Pakistan, as compared to conventional marriages. **Career - Family - Equal Opportunities in the Czech Republic – Studies on Women and Men in the Czech Labour Market**. This publication presents “the results of various studies concerning the position of women and men in the Czech labour market. The analyses were carried out as a part of the EU Equal project “Fifty - fifty: Equal Opportunities for Women and Men” coordinated by Gender Studies, o.p.s, and co-financed by the EU European Social Fund and the Czech Republic state budget. **The Unfinished Story of Women and the United Nations**. This is a publication of the Non-Governmental Liaison Service (NGLS) Development Dossier series that looks back at more than 85 years of history of women and inter-governmental organisations. Its author, Ms Hilkka Pietilä, recalls the success story of women and the League of Nations and describes the history of women at the United Nations, especially in the 30 years since the First UN World Conference on Women in 1975 in Mexico City, and up to the ten-year review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action in 2005. 4. CALL FOR PAPERS/PROPOSALS/PARTICIPATION **Gender and Security Sector Reform: Creating Knowledge and Building Capacities**. The Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW) and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) are initiating a joint project entitled Gender and Security Sector Reform: Creating Knowledge and Building Capacities. The project will: 1) Commission new research to produce twelve gender and security sector reform tools. From these tools, shorter briefs will be produced. The full set of resources will be developed into a 'Gender and Security Sector Reform Toolkit'; and 2) Hold e-discussions, an expert workshop and a launch/workshop to review, promote and operationalise the Gender and Security Sector Reform Toolkit, and to strengthen the capacity of project beneficiaries to integrate gender in security sector reform policy and processes. **Feminist Economics**. Feminist Economics invites for the submission of abstracts for their special issue on ‘Unpaid Work, Time Use, and Public Policy.’ The journal welcomes papers that use time use and other data to examine the gendered effects of public policies, including macroeconomic, fiscal, labour, health and other social policies, on time use and unpaid work. Research on countries at different levels of economic development is especially welcome. The special issue will be published in spring 2010. **Consultants: Sexual and Gender-based Violence**. Kvinnoforum is seeking a team leader and experts in Sexual and Gender Based Violence to carry out an evaluation of UNHCR's effort to prevent and respond to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in situations of forced displacement. The evaluation will be undertaken by a team of consultants, selected by means of a competitive bidding process.
