1. NEW! HIGHLIGHT: Global drive to improve maternal and child
health launched at Clinton Global Initiative, United Nations and in New
York City streets
---------------------------------------------------------------------
26 September 2007, New York - In a historic effort to cut maternal
and child deaths, a global coalition of governments and organizations
launched a major advocacy drive today entitled Deliver Now for Women +
Children. The launch took place at public rallies in the city centre
and the Bronx. Women leaders of the United Nations also held a special
discussion Saving 77 Million by 2015: Advancing the Health of Women and
Children.
Deliver Now for Women + Children is a core component of a broader
Global Campaign for the Health Millennium Development Goals announced
today by the Prime Minister of Norway and other national leaders at the
Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in New York. The unprecedented
mobilization responds to alerts raised by the UN confirming the world
is lagging far behind in reaching the Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs) for reducing maternal
and child deaths by 2015.
More than 10 million women and children die each year mostly from
preventable causes, while investment in basic maternal and child health
remains insufficient. At least an additional US$9 billion a year are
needed to meet the basic health care needs of women and children. As of
2004, only US$2 billion--less than a quarter of what is needed-- was
made available by major donors to support such services in developing
countries. "Today is a day of hope for women and children. The cause of
women's and children's health has remained "orphaned" for too long. Now
it is finally emerging from the shadows and gaining the champions it
has always deserved," said Dr Francisco Songane, Director of the
Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health, hosted by WHO in
Geneva. "We are hopeful this will result in action to ensure health
services are available for all with prompt access and without
discrimination," he added …
At the United Nations, Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro,
WHO Director-General Margaret Chan, UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya
Obaid and UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman demonstrated their
commitment to improve maternal health and reduce child mortality during
a high level discussion attended by delegates to the 62nd General
Assembly.
Seventy five countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America account for almost 95% of all maternal and newborn deaths worldwide.
India and Tanzania are the first countries where Deliver Now for
Women + Children country-specific programmes will be launched. These
campaigns will build political commitment for improved health services,
raise media awareness, support action by community groups. India
accounts for 25% of the world's child deaths and 20% of its maternal
deaths. In Tanzania, 50% of women have no access to skilled care during
childbirth due to a critical shortage of qualified health workers and
health facilities.
The Deliver Now for Women + Children initiative will work closely
with other organizations advocating for maternal and child health, and
will be coordinated by the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn &
Child Health.

3. NEW! DISCUSSION: Political will and leadership are fundamental to improving women's access to health services
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Political will and leadership are fundamental to improving women's
access to health services. Efforts to increase women's access to health
services have fallen short in many developing countries because of
underlying economic, political, social and cultural constraints.
Parliamentarians are well-placed to promote gender sensitive health
policies, whether through legislative mandates, acting as public role
models and spokespersons for gender equality and public openness about
HIV and AIDS, or supporting development of a sustainable national
health infrastructure. What is the situation in your country? Please
share your views with the community.

4. NEW! Resource of Interest: Siyanda Update: Realising Rights to Safe and Legal Abortion, Issue No. 59, October 2007
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Globally, about eight women die each hour as a result of unsafe
abortions. How can we ensure that the right of all women to safe and
legal abortion is realised? The following resources are a selection
from over 25 resources added to the Siyanda database on abortion
rights: Unsafe Abortion, id21, August 2007 - What is the cost of unsafe
abortion? This issue of id21 ' health focus' tackles the questions;
Decide - Youth Coalition for Sexual Citizenship (in Spanish), Decidir,
Coalición de Jovenes por la Ciudadania Sexual, January 2007 - This
website provides young people with information on sexual and
reproductive health and rights and has a special section on abortion
rights; International Data for Evaluation of Abortion Services, Ipas,
January 2007 - Information about abortion can be hard to access and
difficult to compare. This online database provides a single central
point for obtaining reliable and standardised data from over 20
countries divided into five categories, and supported by a glossary and
other tools; It is our Decision. Abortion: a Right to Save Women' s
Lives. (in Spanish), Ipas Centroamérica, June 2006 This training
manual aims to support awareness raising, information dissemination and
capacity building on abortion issues. It combines a medical approach
with human rights and theological perspectives; Literature on Unsafe
Abortion in Africa (in English and French), Centre Population et
Developpement (CEPED), March 2006 - This publication contains an
interactive and searchable bibliographical database of resources on
induced abortion in Africa; Death and Denial: Unsafe Abortion and
Poverty, International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), January
2006 This report highlights the key issues related to abortion in
countries where it is restricted or illegal; Unintended Pregnancy and
Induced Abortion in Uganda: Causes and Consequences, Guttmacher
Institute, January 2006 This report urges policymakers and health
planners to consider and debate strategies to address the high levels
of unsafe abortion and low levels of contraceptive use in Uganda.
Gender and Ageing will be the next Quick Guide theme, in November 2007.
Users are invited to suggest resources on this topic for possible
inclusion in the database.
